Sunderland’s Career Start GP Scheme is a highly successful programme to recruit and support recently qualified GPs, assisting them to take their first steps into a new and exciting career.
As an established and recurrent scheme, we are one of the few Career Start initiatives that can offer the opportunity to develop a support network with other recent graduates who are also at the beginning of their journey into General Practice, a network that we hope will be maintained over the course of our GPs’ careers. The city of Sunderland has an ambitious vision for health and social care, and extremely strong and mature relationships between providers and commissioners which are driving forward innovation. This is reflected in our Vanguard status and development of a new model of care for our patients – that of a Multispeciality Community Provider.
Run by a prominent GP federation, Sunderland GP Alliance, the scheme offers a highly competitive salary of £70k, the payment of professional indemnity fees, and up to £5k towards the cost of your continuing professional development for each year you’re in the scheme. You may select either a one or two-year programme, and will have the flexibility to adapt the scheme to your priorities, choosing between 5 and 8 clinical sessions per week, and either 1 or 2 CPD sessions, to a maximum total of 9 sessions per week.
Throughout the programme you will be supported by our GP Supervisor, who will oversee your professional development, and have a minimum of two hours protected time per week with your dedicated host practice GP, for peer support and case based discussions. Development of leadership and business management skills is encouraged and substantial opportunities for progression to partner exist within the city.
